The Guest speaker for 6-4-26 was Joe Ciccolo. Joann introduced Joe saying that Joe is the Founder & President of BitAML and ComplyFit. BitAML is a compliance advisory firm exclusively serving the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency market. Joe is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and Anti-Money Laundering Certified Associate (AMLCA). He is a graduate of Northeastern University, College of Criminal Justice, and Joe is a member of the Rocklin Rotary Club.Joe began by saying reasons why Bitcoin and other crypto currency have become popular: Bitcoin sends money across the world instantly and is cheaper than sending via banks. He then talked about Stablecoins which are digital dollars (1-1 USD-backed) and designed for price stability. He covered why they matter and how they are different with several examples. He then discussed that the speed and access of crypto also include risks. The instant movement of money can lead to irreversible transactions which means less time to detect and stop fraud and scams. Joe spoke of the Global Scan Economy particularly in Asia and talked of a record setting anti-scam operation in Thailand that seized $8 billion in cryptocurrency. He stressed the risks are real. He closed by showing how Rotary could benefit using Stablecoins for International Service Funding: getting funds to Rotary projects in minutes, not days or weeks.
