Speakers Joanne Haag and Donna Lange gave a very informative introduction to the non-profit called Word Busters. Word Busters was founded in Auburn by Linda LeBue 11 years ago and has grown from 1 school to 23 schools located in Auburn. Rocklin and Roseville." My Little Word Success Book is the primary tool used by our Word Busters school volunteer program. In this program, five adults assume responsibility for one classroom of 22-25 children. Each volunteer works one day a week for approximately one hour. For children to master these skills in record time, they should have the opportunity to practice daily in kindergarten and first grade, and several times a week in second grade. The volunteers work one-on-one with each child in short practice sessions we call the "Two-Minute Session." Teachers appreciate that children are away from the classroom activities for only a brief period of time working with the adult. The session takes place quietly in the back of the room." (Word Buster Website.) Donna and Joanne said that this program is highly respected because this program has raised the reading test scores significantly in the schools that participate.
