Our Literacy Activities

Literacy is one of the key areas that Rotary supports worldwide.  Lincoln Rotary is very active in encouraging young students in our community to read.   It has been said that "kids learn to read up to the third grade, and beyond that they read to learn." We support our local elementary schools with two projects to encourage good reading at the grade-school level.

At Creekside Oaks Elementary, we have a "Book Buddies" program.   Every two weeks after our Thursday noon Club meeting, about twenty members and volunteers go to the school to read one-on-one with students. For many students, this is the only significant opportunity they have to read with an adult.  We could use a few more volunteers so contact our Literacy Chair Karen Johnson if you want to help.

For all seven elementary schools in Western Placer school district, we had a "Bikes for Books" project.  For each trimester of the school year, students are encouraged to reach their Advanced Reading Goals by their teachers.  For each student who achieves these goals, they have their name entered for a drawing to win a bike.   Teachers note that this added incentive has increased the number of students achieving their reading goals.
