This week's Rotarian in the "Getting to Know You ..." better column is Alan Lowe. He shares the following: I was born and raised in New York, but have spent over 59 years in California, the past 21 living in Lincoln with my wife, Barbara. We have been married for 24 years. I have two children, a son and a daughter, with my former wife, and three grandsons. Barbara and I share a furry four-legged child, a Goldendoodle named Izzy. I earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology/Counseling from UCLA. My 39-year career in higher education involved teaching, counseling, and administration. I also was a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I retired in 2008 from my position of Vice Chancellor for Educational Planning and Services for the Yuba Community College District in Marysville, CA. I've had a long history in Rotary. I was a Rotarian for 13 years in the Bay Area, where I became a charter member of the Mission San Jose Rotary Club in Fremont in 1982. I was in the Mission San Jose Club for 10 years and the Sunnyvale Rotary Club for three years, after a job change that took me to Santa Clara. I served on the Board of Directors of both clubs, as President of the Mission San Jose club, 1988-89, and on the Board of Directors of District 5170. I’ve been a member of the Rotary Club of Lincoln for 15 years, since 2008, and served on our club’s Board of Directors for one year and on our Foundation Board for four years, serving as president during 2012-2013. I’ve been involved in Youth Service for most of my years in the club. I also am our club’s poet laureate and local lyricist.
In addition to Rotary, in retirement, I enjoy writing poetry, short stories, and plays. I've written and directed five Lincoln Hills Players Club Readers Theater shows, which have been or will be ("Memories Are Made Of This", February 3 and 4, 2024, at 3:00 PM) performed on stage in Presentation Hall, Kalaga Springs, Sin City Lincoln hills. Admission is free. And my blog, slolowe44,blogspot.com, allows me to share my creativity worldwide.
As a member of the Poets Club of Lincoln, I’ve served as the Coordinator of the Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest since 2009. It is now an international contest that has grown steadily, both in the number of poets entering and the number of poems submitted.
I also was a volunteer mediator for Placer County for 12 years and served as President of the Placer Dispute Resolution Board of Directors for six. I plan to continue to serve our city and county, in the future, and to bring others into my world through my literary creativity.
