The speaker for July 18 will be Past-President Richard Pearl. Richard will be sharing his recent trip with Penny, to India and Nepal, as well as his experience at Mt. Everest.
President Greg Kevin opened his first meeting as President on July 11, 2024, with 27 members and 6 guests present. The flag salute was led by Kris Wyatt and the Four-Way Test by Clark Osterhout. Guests included Speaker Joe Patterson, his daughter Andi, and his Chief of Staff, Tiffany Saathoff. Additional guests included Erin Frye, James Wedell. Nita Wracker and Whitney Ecklund.
Clark provided an excellent history of what Paul Harris stands for, and how it is achieved, before presenting a Paul Harris + 5 to Paul from the club, in recognition of his many years of Chairing the World Service Committee.
Members then recognized Paul's accomplishment with a standing ovation.
Alan was asked to read a letter from this year's RYLA student. Kim Mc Cue's daughter wrote that at RYLA she met new friends, learned a lot about herself, got on the ropes challenge even though she is afraid of heights. She thanked the club for providing her this opportunity. Kris surprised Greg by giving him a white beard, a fancy Magician's hat, and a wand to assist in his magic making for his Presidency in 2024-25.
Joe Patterson is a former City council member and Mayor of Rocklin. He was elected to the State Assembly in 2022, representing the 5th District. Joe related that serving in the State Assembly with only 17 other Republican versus 64 Democrats makes passing legislation difficult. He, however, tries to maintain cordial relationships with some democrats so that he can help move legislation forward. For example, he has been influential in moving Proposition 47 forward in a bi-partisan way. This reform, also called "The Homelessness , Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act", tries to bring harsher penalties to repeat offenders, to hold them accountable and to get them into the criminal justice system. Joe was particularly involved in Proposition 36, which was opposed by Gov. Newsome using wording, without parental permission, about a child murdered in his district . Gov. Newsom subsequently removed his opposition to Proposition 36. Joe presented a very informative discussion in a humorous manner, enjoyed by all.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed ideas for this Bulletin, and to Jan for proofreading, and Bill for his awesome photos.
