The speaker for Thursday, January 2nd, is Amber Celmer, Executive Director of HomeAid Sacramento. Her topic is Community Impact and how to help the homeless by building and renovating shelters for people transitioning out of homelessness.
President Greg opened the meeting with 29 members and 5 guests. The flag salute was led by Keela and the Four Way test was led by President Greg. Guests welcomed were: Guest Speaker Veronica Blake, Penny Pearl (Richard), Suk Yee Tan (Bryan), Andre Rizz, Samuel Zakharchuk and Jennifer Zehner.
Guests Andre Rizz and Samuel Zakharchuk shared the Kids Helping Kids Project with us: Kids Helping Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation run entirely by junior and senior high school students in Sacramento. Kids Helping Kids serves a total of five populations. Locally, our work with elementary schools through mentoring and gardening projects help kids in our community thrive.
President Greg presented rules to keep in mind re: microphone etiquette: If you are unable to hear, raise your hand, please don’t shout or yell, we are working to improve the sound system (new headsets for everyone)?
Membership chair, Bryan Ludwig, welcomed and inducted new red badge member, Ken Torney, (Lindsey’s Dad). He will have a mentor to advise him on the steps to complete for his blue badge. The club then gave him a standing ovation and applause.
A check for $500 was presented to the mother with five children whose Lincoln home was destroyed in a recent fire. Members contributed to the donation. Lindsey reminded us of the Dec. 21st Santa’s Workshop 4- 6 p.m. in Beerman’s Plaza, with the Face Painting booth. Pres. Greg shared a Diapers and Wipes (Clean) collection for infants at RCL meeting on Jan. 16, 2025 to donate to The Lighthouse. The Peace Conference will be held in Rohnert Park soon. The Practical Relevant Leadership Skills workshop at Sierra College, will have Joann as one of its teachers. Pres. Greg reminded us of the TopGolf Fundraiser on Jan. 28th….fun, even if you’re not a golfer. Joann will be selling tickets to the Winefest to be held on April 26, 2025. Paul shared that our WCS is funding two schools in Haiti, which has expanded to 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. He also will send a check to Safe Passage in Guatemala. Kris, along with the Women’s Club and the Interact club sent out 200 Santa letters to kids.
As Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Veronica Blake uses her knowledge of the region’s nonprofit sector to connect the charitable interests of donors with needs in the community. She serves as the primary liaison with the board of directors and all committees, directs all asset development activities and manages the operations of the Community Foundation. Veronica is a champion of community philanthropy, and of community foundation leadership. She is a senior fellow of American Leadership Forum Mountain Valley Chapter, and is the past Chair and current member of the Economic Development Board for Placer County. She also serves on the board of directors for The League of California Community Foundations. She has over 25 years’ executive-level management experience, 21 of which has been in the non-profit sector. Prior to joining the Placer Community Foundation, Veronica served as the Executive Director for both the Placer SPCA and the Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital Foundation. When she isn’t working, Veronica can be found riding her mountain bike somewhere in the Sierra Nevada or in the audience listening to jam bands. She presented facts about the Placer Community Foundation, Unique Features, Charitable Fund Management, Grants by Focus Area, Community Leadership, Affordable Housing is the Right Thing to Do, Building on Surplus Government Property, Building on Religiously Owned Property, Incorporated Inclusionary Zoning, and the Need for Infrastructure to Support New Housing.
