On Wednesday, we went the the Lincoln High School Farm to support their Open House and Chili Cookout. The farm is amazing in that it is the largest school farm west of the Mississippi. They raise animals, they raise crops and they have a large shop to learn auto mechanics, welding and other vocational subjects. They have about 15 arc welding stations.
Our chili entry, Zombie Chili (its chosen name instead of calling it Road Kill Chili) provided by David and Caroline Cesio was delicious but we did not even place in the top three. Kudos to the American Legion, Thermalands 4H and Double Barrel Smokehouse. But we met lots of terrific people and had fun.
Our Meeting - This Thursday (and most every Thursday) at the Woman's Club - Come Visit Us
We had an awesome meeting Thursday. Started with a great lunch, including the leftover Zombie Chili with some cornbread. We have many guests including some checking us out for possible membership in the club.
Lydell Grey presented us with two tickets to the May 11th Fruitvale School benefit BBQ dinner; winners were Claire and Signe. You may contact Lydell at lyndellgr@hotmail.com if you are interested in tickets for this great fundraiser for the school.
Wild Bill Cook announced the the Blood Drive last week was a bit short on donors and thanked our members Karen Johnson and Bill Laube for donating. (Our members saved their strength for the Wine Fest!)
Our speaker was Larry Yaggi, representing the Lincoln Veterans Memorial Alliance. They are erecting a memorial in McBean Park, near the Pavillion, that will provide over 1000 veterans plaques for Placer County Vets. More info at LVMA Website.
We have a very fun party for Big DOG. We gathered at the home of Melanie Bergavin for finger food and our favorite beverages. But the main purpose of the event was to collect money for the Rotary International Foundation that does great things to support Rotary activities all over the world in the areas of
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development
To raise money, we had a blind wine auction, officiated by David Bonillo who is always so much fun. And, Clark Osterhout and Kristine Mollenkopf each donated a fully catered dinner at their homes for auction. The good news, generous Rotarians bid up the wine (including a bottle of $2 Chuck) and dinners to raise over $5,000. What an evening.
Coming up at our May 9nd meeting, Rotarian Bill Tobin will tell us about Shelter Box that provides emergency shelter to displaced persons around the world.
