President Richard opened the meeting with the Flag salute by Kris and Truman led the Four Way Test with 28 members and 5 guests present. Guests present: Wayne Crow (Diane Fix), Josh Armstrong and Guest Speakers: Patti Covey, and Bec Cannistraci(and wife Mary) of Kiwanis Foothills.
Kris Wyatt announced that we won’t have an exchange student next year, due to a family decision. Clark and Janet Osterhout returned from their trip to Hawaii, and he played golf for the first time in two years. Truman offered to lead the Four Way Test next week, minus his comedic routine today (however enjoyable). Josh Armstrong was introduced by Joann as an incredible leader of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce. Josh told us that the RCL has received a nomination for the Service Club of the Year. The Chamber members are voting. The event on February 9th will celebrate the nominees. What we’ve done as a club really counts. Bill Alston told us of his project re: the desalinization of water, and the importance of turning around magneto hydrodynamics. Our scientist, par excellence, speaks beyond most of our abilities to comprehend. Joann and Bill made it back from their trip to AZ and baseball with Bill unscathed this year. Richard announced that Carole Orlando will be our new Chair of the Community Services Committee. Richard also announced that our RCL Strategic Planning committee is working on a report of the Dart properties. All is well re: closing/cash/ and properties. Clark reminded members that if you donate online to the Foundation to let Clark know, as the club will match up to $200. Our total giving has been $8000 to Rotary International. Kris said we have four tables at the PHX High School event. Kim said that there are so many “dinners” coming up that we will cancel the Taste of Italy and partner with the Rodeo Cow Chip Bingo barbeque….much fun, and less work! Wild Bill reminded us of the Blood Drive on Feb. 9th. Richard called on one of our newer members, and president elect, Greg Kevin, to give an “ice breaker” presentation, which was an excellent video on his life, career, travel, music, and passion of baseball. Richard added to the bulletin that Bryan Ludwig will be the new Membership Chair.
Bec Cannistraci and Patti Covey of the Kiwanis Foothills
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers from 85 nations and territories dedicated to improving the lives of children, families, and communities through fellowship and service. We were chartered in 2015 and are in division 44, the Cal-Nev-Ha district. Of the 14 clubs in our district, we are the 2nd largest with 60 members. We hold several modest fund raisers each year, things like fireworks sales and fashion show lunches. We do our best service work in the schools. We have a large number of former educators in our club so we: have service leadership projects and tutoring in elementary schools’ grades 3-5, the Middle School, and Phoenix High School. We provide healthful snacks and have a free new shoe program in the schools. We hold a very popular safety day once a year in a different school where we involve the fire dept., police dept., red cross, and other organizations to teach the students about safety. Our Health Fair involving dental, vision, bike helmets, food, games, haircuts, etc. was poorly attended this past year, so we’ve cancelled future Health Fairs, as we reevaluate the situation. Our focus is on maintaining the dignity of those we help so we try to work quietly under the radar with our support funds. Many thanks to everyone who contributed ideas for this Bulletin, and to Jan for proofreading, and Bill for his awesome photos.
