Kelly Callahan introduced speaker Scott Seacrest, who is an engineering teacher. He joined LHS in 2006. In 2017 he started an Engineering Class which ‘morphed’ into the Shark Tank Project. He teaches 175 students annually. Shark Tank is a course for an Engineering Pathway in which students learn how to build a startup manufacturing company: which includes start up $, payroll, choice of a project to develop, design manufacture program, documentation, design of a prototype, and the manufacture of a fully functional product that is market ready. Other tasks: develop a business plan, pitch the product and secure capital, manage finances, interact with the “Shark” to distribute capital, and deal with the “Wheel of Doom” (bad things which may happen). The Sharks are local business and owners and their employers. The goal is to take a product from start to finish. The students each shared with us a project they have designed. These senior students must keep the “shark” happy. They must interact with the community and learn how to talk with adults.
