Great Turnout for Community Blood Drive

Through the hard work of our members, especially Dan Johnson, we hosted another very successful blood drive and supported BloodSource's needs for blood.  This was especially important to them since blood drives from the day before had to be canceled due to weather. We had 51 people register, collecting 41 pints of whole blood and 7 platelet collections.   It was an awesome response of our community to the cards and calls from BloodSource, posters downtown, our plea to our members and facebook postings.

Thank you to all who volunteered and/or donated.

LHS FFA Students - An Awesome Group

After the pledge of allegiance, Art opened the meeting with a Thought for the Day on Rotary Family Month for December. Then, we did a karaoke rendition of “White Christmas,” not necessarily singing in sync with the words on the screen.  sad

ImageRose thanked us for support at the Lincoln Firefigher-sponsored Turkey Run. Collection of 269 turkeys plus one Game Hen + lots of other food and money equals a great event.  Frank thanked us for our Toys for Tots plans, including support to two foster kids – bring your donation to the Xmas Party.  Rose is also trying to organize an event to donate small Xmas Trees to a Senior Living facility in Lincoln - more to follow.  And, she requested that we bring Children’s books to our Dec. 18th meeting to give to the Lighthouse.  Way to go Rose.

Clark presented Stan Nader with a PH+1 Paul Harris award. Thank you Stan.

David C. is discussing with Kim at Country Kitchend how we can support their annual event of delivering meals to the needy.

Eat your Wheaties!  The Lincoln Community Blood Drive is on December 12th at Veterans Memorial Hall down the street.  Come to the Xmas Tree Lighting at Beerman’s Plaza this Saturday where we will encourage more participants.

Clark briefly discussed the Membership Committee arrangement for a Sunset Meeting as an additional meeting that could be attended by Lincoln residents who can’t attend our noon meeting. This is being proposed as an alternate for all members. Current plan is 1st and 3rd Thursdays – 5:30 to 6:30.   All members can apply to attend the alternate meeting. Expect to hear more at our next meeting.

Clark also reported that Paul had requested to be relieved of the President-Elect position due to some medical and persona/family reasons.  Thank you to Harvey Ulijohn for stepping up and volunteering to be President-Elect.  Clark also stated that the committee is still looking for a President-Elect Nominee for the 2016-2017 year presidency.

We were proud to have the LHS FFA (Future Farmers of America) as our guest speakers.  These are awesome kids.  They were accompanied with Art’s guest Victoria McCoy, mother of the FFA president Jocelyn McCoy.  They described their trip to the USA FFA convention last year, including a side trip to Washington D.C.

Book Buddies at Creekside Oaks Elementary followed the meeting.  Remember, our Christmas Party is next week on Thursday – no meeting.  Reservations are closed!  Also, bring a Toys for Tots and a gift for Beatrice, our RYE student.

Report on our Ajijic Mexico Project

Several years ago, we used a Rotary Foundation grant to help in a project to combat high mortality rate among women in the rural Mexican community of Ajijic by providing screenings for cervical and breast cancer.  This project was just recently featured in the November 2014 Rotary Leader.  For the full story - Click Link.
