Thank you, Carol Abbanat, for taking notes at last week's meeting!

17 Members attended the Field Trip to Waste Management organized by Richard Pearl. Emily Hoffman “Chief Trash Talker” gave a very interesting introduction to the many facets of Waste Management.

She began with photos of  the Tipping Port where daily household trash are deposited each day. Then the Finished Product Room with all the recycled item are corralled.

The Placer Waste Management Facility was started in 1978 with Joint Powers of Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln and at that time everything collected went to landfill. In the 1990's, because the cities didn't want trucks and dumpsters impacting residents, everything then was subject to recycling at the site. In 1995, sorting was started and by doing the sorting and recycling at the Waste Management location (rather that at homes) Placer county residents have 100 % compliance with current laws.

Emily illustrated that this is more efficient because the 40-50 people working the process of  picking through the garbage are trained in locating many more items than the public know are worth recycling.

There is a focus on articles that businesses pick up that can be sold, such as aluminum cans, clothing, and plastics such as bottles and all kinds of toys, faucets, bicycles to name a few.

She also talked about the composting done on site that is primarily sold to farms in the Central Valley.

All types of construction and remodel stuff are accepted at the facility, metal items and even mattresses are accepted at no cost.  No burning of garbage of any kind at the site. What can be seen is steam. Also, methane from the landfill is captured and converted to electricity that services 10,000 homes per year.

The current landfill is projected to be full about 2058. In 2017 a Master Plan was developed. Areas for future land fill have been designated. A new building for sorting garbage is planned that will utilize (by 2024) robots for the sorting and reduce the need for human sorting to 8-10. Currently 30% of household garbage is recycled,  with the new facilities this will increase to 60-65%.

After the talk from Emily the members toured the Tipping Building that had non-stop trucks emptying tons of stuff than is picked up by a conveyor setup and deposited on a conveyor system at the next level of the building. People were working diligently at separating the recycle from the non-recycle material.
