Kerry Callahan introduced speaker, Jan Hladun, saying as part of her introduction that Jan is the best educator she has worked with. Jan started by saying that she likes the recognition that our Rotary club gives with the Student of the Month program and other ways that Rotary support the schools. She continued with the "Paper Clip Experiment " of the 1960's that showed that 98% of 5-year- olds in the study were considered "genius" due to the volume of their divergent thiunking.10-year-olds: dropped to 30% , 15-year-olds: 12 % and adults: 2%. From that study over the years the goal became to open divergent creative thinking among all students. Jan acknowledged that educators feel a lot of pressure with more demands within teaching and less time available to do the requirements. Older students struggle to know what they want to do, exhibiting inability to develop long and short-term goals. She expressed concerns about the impact that social media affects children as well as the issue of cell phones in the classrooms. Western Placer Unified School District has adopted a way forward for change called "Portrait of a Learner," This is a long term strategy of how to address positive changes in the future.
