Events and Committee Announcements

Keela reported on her recent planning meeting for Fundraising and Events. She reported, with much enthusiasm, that the Christmas Parade is the upcoming event, saying that help would be needed to build and decorate the float. The float will have lights and the theme: "Service above Self" .Save the Dates of Nov. 3rd and Nov.10 from 10-2 at Keela's home (1718 Hungry Hollow Road, Lincoln) to bring this float to fruition. Kris Wyatt reminded us about the Lincoln Activities League event which will need volunteer bartenders and ticket sellers for the Nov. 13th event at McBean Park. Bryan, Membership Chair, reported that at the next meeting, the District Governor's annual visit, there will be a membership Induction and 4 members will graduate from Red Badges to Blue Badges. Additionally, he accepted 3 more club applications today. Kris also reported on our past RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) student visit, and that the student remembered many members' support during her time in Lincoln. Kris also reported that there are 2 prospective students for RYE for 2025-2026. Truman asked members to bring coats and any other items for the cold weather to the next meeting 10-24-24. The deadline for this need is soon.

Guest Speaker
Kerry Callahan introduced speaker, Jan Hladun, saying as part of her introduction that Jan is the best educator she has worked with. Jan started by saying that she likes the recognition that our
Rotary club gives with the Student of the Month program and other ways that Rotary support the schools. She continued with the "Paper Clip Experiment " of the 1960's that showed that 98% of 5-year- olds in the study were considered "genius" due to the volume of their divergent thiunking.10-year-olds: dropped to 30% , 15-year-olds: 12 % and adults: 2%. From that study over the years the goal became to open divergent creative thinking among all students. Jan acknowledged that educators feel a lot of pressure with more demands within teaching and less time available to do the requirements. Older students struggle to know what they want to do, exhibiting inability to develop long and short-term goals. She expressed concerns about the impact that social media affects children as well as the issue of cell phones in the classrooms. Western Placer Unified School District has adopted a way forward for change called "Portrait of a Learner," This is a long term strategy of how to address positive changes in the future. More information can be found on the WPUSD website.
