In a past meeting Kerry Callaghan Happy Buck shared that she had started a WPUSD Student Senate Program. This intrigued me and so this week her program is in the Bulletin Spotlight.

Superintendent Kerry Callaghan invited selected students to be a part of this new venture. She personally reached out to the students and parents saying that she believes in the power of student voices and their role in decision making. Also saying that this is a unique opportunity for students to actively participate in shaping the future of the district and schools.

The Student Senate will be a platform where students can share their thoughts, ideas and concerns about various aspects of their schools. From academics to extracurricular activities, from facilities to policies - the Student Senate input will directly influence the choices that are made.

The students selected to be the Senators agreed to participate in six meeting across the school year. An introductory session is scheduled for October 10th where the students will get the know staff and fellow student leaders, understand the goals of the Student Senate and begin positive change within our schools. Transportation will be provided for all the meetings as well as lunch before returning to school.

As part of the Student Senate they will :

*Have a Voice: their opinions will be heard and valued in discussions that impact education

*Make a Difference: the ideas will contribute to decisions that shape the school experience for all students.

*Learn and Lead: as Senators they will develop essential leadership skills through collaboration and problem solving.

Kerry will provide an update on the progress and results of the Student Senate at a future meeting.
